BWA Auction For 700 MHz Will Be Fierce

Right now, 3G (HSPA) is neither a choice for affordable wireless broadband, nor a choice for last mile connectivity in rural areas.
But if everything goes perfect, we can see affordable broadband with wireless access a reality. Because Govt plans for another bonanza – conducting auction for 700Mhz band.
India has about 108 units of airwaves in the 700 MHz band 50% of which is used by Doordarshan, 36 units are used by armed forces and remaining 24 MHz is held by other government agencies.
Govt. of India plans to auction 700MHz spectrum in 2012, following digitalization of Doordarshan at the end of 2011. Defence forces may also vacate spectrum in 700 Mhz band along with 45MHz spectrum (of which 25MHz is 3G spectrum) following the roll out of optic fibre cable (OFC) made by BSNL.
It also starts tussle between DoT and ministry of Information and Broadcast regarding vacating of this airwave. Ministry of I&B claimed that the spectrum in 700 Mhz is reserved for public broadcaster Doordarshan (DD). But it is expected I&B ministry will come to a point and DoT has to bear the expenses of digitalization of Doordarshan like they did to roll out OFC for defence forces.
LTE rollout on 700Mhz band can revolutionize growth of internet in India, as due to lower frequencies it can propagate and penetrate better and can offer more spectrally efficient service (due to more bits/Hz). LTE base on 2.3 Ghz can cover around 2-5 Km radius area while LTE base on 700Mhz can cover upto 15Km radius area. The higher band is better for high capacity, dense deployments.
Even cost of LTE roll out on 700 Mhz will be one-third of LTE on 2.3GHz. For these reasons LTE on 700 Mhz is better choice for wireless broadband in rural areas. Verizon recently announced that test runs on its LTE network using 700 MHz spectrum was giving peak speeds of around 25Mbps.
This auction will also kill the dream of WiMAX forum to roll out WiMAX in India. As technically TD-LTE is the choice of technology for this band. Importantly LTE ecosystem is getting stronger day by day, after one year of commercial roll out in Norway & Sweden now there are 19 LTE networks up and running, with 6 smartphones, 6 notebooks/netbooks, 7 mobile tablets, and 22 modules expected to be available this year. Currently BSNL & Reliance are only players offering WiMaX in selected areas, and BSNL’s plan to roll out WiMAX on a franchiese basis has been under controvercy.
Largest private telco, Bharti Airtel (got BWA license in just 4 circles) is lobbying for auction of this band. It has stated openly that its 4G strategy will rest mainly on future allocations in 700MHz and FDD 2.5GHz along with experiment with these four circles.
It is expected loosers of 3G/BWA auction like Tata Tele, Vodafone, Idea Cellular (aims to be a pan India ISP) and Telenor/Uninor (who did not take part in 3G auction), Sistema/MTS (given they prioritze data services) will also take part in it. Even Infotel, current pan India BWA winner on 2.3GHz band which is now subsidiary of Mukesh Ambani headed Reliance Industries is expected to participate it. In 2008, the US government raised close to $20 billion by auctioning three blocks of spectrum in the 700 MHz band. Indian government can expect more because of the fierce competition between more players.
But it is also obvious that private telcos has little social responsibilities like BSNL has, and they will not go for rural wireless broadband. Whatever auction happens or not, I strongly believe BSNL must be awarded 700 Mhz airwave to roll out LTE specially for rural areas to bring wireless broadband to the remote parts of the country.

Reliance Unlimited Wireless Internet Now for Rs. 169

Reliance Communications (Rcom) today unveiled its path breaking initiative to break the price barrier for Internet access for billions of Indians across 24,000 towns and 600,000 villages with launch of low speed Unlimited Wireless Internet for Rs. 169 per month dubbed as “City Unlimited”.
Reliance also slashed the cost of its CDMA 1X Netconnect USB stick modem to Rs. 1099 and offers Unlimited Data usage at affordable tariff of just Rs. 169 only for prepaid users with speed of up to 153 kbps (kilobit per second). This plan has been launched across the country EXCEPT the top 1000 towns.
According to Rcom, Many parts of India are still under penetrated in terms of internet usage. Reliance launches its new offering ‘City Unlimited’ which comes with truly unlimited data usage and Internet access, within the same city with wireless internet speed of up to 153 kbps. These cities where this plan is available is mapped to over 1700 STD codes.
RCOM led India’s first telecom revolution by making a phone call more affordable. It is now leading the second wave by making India a WireFree country, where every Indian has access to Internet at the click of mouse or the press of a key. This is in line with Reliance’s vision to usher in digital revolution by making the telecom services available to the countrymen while offering them at the most affordable prices.
Mahesh Prasad, President –Wireless Business, Reliance Communications said There remains abundant headroom for data growth since many regions of the country are still significantly under penetrated and unwired. RCOM‘s strategy is to reach this unconnected hinterland, giving millions of Indians affordable internet usage. In these parts of the country, PC penetration is increasing with the popularity of music and movies online, social networking and email. Dial up network or poor GPRS connectivity are the only options available for internet access and the customer experience is very poor on account of poor network quality and lower speeds.
‘City Unlimited’ makes the internet access very affordable, but, more importantly provides the speed with unlimited data usage for using various internet applications. The service plan is targeted at small/medium businesses, students and homemakers. RCOM’s network presence provides competitive edge of diverse technology and nationwide reach of Internet access for everyone

Battle of Mobile OS: Apple iOS vs Google Android

IOS being developed by Apple and Android Operating System being developed by Google are striving hard for their supremacy in the world of Mobile Operating Systems. While Apple is a company with good Hardware as well as its own software (iOS).
Google the search engine giant has its own resources and stamina to make Android stand first .With these two giant companies developing their own Mobile Operating Systems the heat is up in the mobile market bringing Symbian and other Operating Systems down.
We can clearly see the competition between the Applications developed and the devices being sold all over the world. Google is trying to integrate all its Desktop services to mobile by providing all its services through Android OS. Truly speaking the applications for iOS are more in number compared with that of Android (Because the entire US Market is IOS dependent) but the app share for Android is growing rapidly.
One finds it’s very difficult to compare between that of an Apple IPhone and to Google’s Android, because they are not the same when integrating both Hardware and software together. An IPhone comes both Hardware and Software integrated together but it’s not the case with Android.
In Android the Hardware may be the best but the software that integrates it may not be the perfect to meet the needs of hardware and hence a poor outcome. Keeping this in view let us now have a comparison between these two operating systems.
IOS
The first and most important advantage of IOS is its simplicity in using the interface. Even children can use the IOS with much ease and comfort. Tons of iPhone apps till date and still growing.
Android
Android bought a revolution in the User Interface after people are fed-up with the boring Symbian Icons and UI. Tons of Android apps and still growing.
Apps in IOS use better graphics, have better UI and are very easy to use. Apps in Android use basic graphics and all the functionality lies in the menus and are hidden under options.
Apple says NO to Flash support. It supports only two platforms, HTML5 and its App store. A Beta version of Flash Player 10.1 available on Android 2.2.Desktop like Browsing experience.
Apple provides support for its services like Music, Books and Applications all through its ITunes store, IBooks store and MobileME services. Local backup service available when cloud services fail. Google provides applications integrated within the OS only for its Services like Gmail, calendar, Gtalk, Contacts, Android Market while support for all other extra services like music, data backup and sync  are provided by third party applications.
One of the most important advantage of IOS what we found is that all IOS devices get the latest software updates available, So every device with its hardware supported gets the latest software update available. Though Google releases the latest version of software updates for every six months, not all the Android devices get the software update, only a few devices receive the update. This is purely dependent on specific Phone Manufacture. So a specific model may have the best hardware but an outdated Operating System. Only a very few percent of Android users are running the latest OS available till date.
There is very little tweaking and customization allowed by iOS. You have to do it Apple’s way or else it’s not an option. These limits allow iOS products to function very well within the protected space as rules set out by Apple. However, if you have the need or desire to do something that is not within the boundaries Apple has set for iOS (and can’t create an app to handle it) or else leave it for luck! The Android operating system is open source and so hardware makers can take it and do almost anything they want with it. This is one of the main reasons why the devices are not getting software updates as soon as they are available. The Device manufactures are tweaking the UI adding up their very own interface like HTC Sense, SAMSUNG Touch Wiz etc. This may happen or not and thus Update fails leaving the user with outdated OS.
Apple can design hardware whatever best suits its software and make the whole device a packed master piece. It’s not the case with Android, different Manufactures build different Hardware and Android should abide by it.
Other features/Drawbacks: Multitasking , Native Video chat support, Threading conversations, Unified Email inbox,Copy paste, folders, internet tethering , No Wi-Fi hot, No Flash support, No Widgets, No removable storage. Other features/Drawbacks: Multitasking, Video chat support by add on apps,HTML5 support, unified inbox, threaded view conversations, Flash Support for Browser, internet tethering ,Wi-Fi Hotspot supports till 8 devices, removable storage support, Folders, copy paste, Widgets support.
But one thing is clear, unless or until Google puts some restrictions to Mobile manufacturers regarding the OS updates available to customers it cannot have the blessings from its hardcore fans who own an Android!
But all these don’t mean IOS is ahead of Android OS. As long as Google is developing Android with its support and services,Android stands still like a Giant with millions of devices being sold every minute all over the world and also being an open source it’s a big advantage to Android as well as its developers.
Despite of all the Advantages/Disadvantages of each Operating System people who are using their Mobile Device operating system knew the power of their OS and how far they are able to agree it!
