Telenor, the Norway based telcom company that operates mobile services under the Uninor brand in India has announced that it will bring operator billing and India-Centric mobile apps on the Android Market to Indian users in 2012.

Telenor and Google launched a global agreement to stimulate further growth of the Android ecosystem.

Uninor’s Android smartphone users will be able to access a carefully selected and continuously updated suite of local relevant apps inside a fixed destination on the front page of Android Market, in a store-in-store concept.

After the launch of above service, Telenor / Uninor customers can also pay for apps via Operator billing system, considered crucial in driving app adoption. Local developers benefit by the increased exposure of their apps and the potential of increased revenues.

An editorial team in each market will be responsible for selecting and presenting up to 50 apps with high local relevance. Operator billing makes it easy for Uninor / Telenor’s Android users to pay for apps, via prepaid or postpaid subscriptions, and enables developers to more easily monetize on their products. Industry data shows that, given the option of paying via credit card or operator billing, approximately 70% prefer the latter.

The agreement between Google and Telenor covers its 11 international markets, with initial launch in the first quarter 2012 in Thailand, Malaysia, Hungary, Sweden and Denmark. While remaining global markets (India, Bangladesh, Serbia, Montenegro and Norway) will be able to enjoy the upgraded Android experience later in 2012.

Uninor Pulls The Reins On Its Philanthropy With Talktime

Uninor the most talked about new entrant in the telecom industry had its chief appeal among the masses for the generous talktime it offered on topup vouchers.

While other operators offer a maximum of full talktime recharge topup denominations, often divided into core talktime and promotional or on net talktime with limited usage duration, Uninor offered a wide range of extra talktime topup options whereby the user got more talktime than what he payed for and that too complete core talktime with lifetime validity.

The chief attraction of this scheme was the Rs. 500 recharge denomination which gave the user Rs. 600 worth of talktime which implies a 20% bonus talktime. Recently the company revised this voucher in Mumbai and is now giving only 500 full talktime with no bonus.

The company has yet not informed the consumers about this change in scheme, infact the official website still displays Rs. 600 talktime on Rs. 500 topup.

To confirm the change the user can dial 50001 or contact customer care on 121 and inquire about the revised benefits of the voucher.

Uninor Rations GPRS Usage 200 MB per Day

One of the new entrant in 2008, Uninor which showing best results among the newcomers, is started to follow the tariff hiking trend differently.

Earlier we informed that Uninor increased price of on-net STV. Now Uninor has started rationing the GPRS usage to its subscribers who opt Internet packs.

Now Uninor users can spend maximum of 200 MB per day on internet, post 200 MB GPRS charge will be 10p/10KB. Unused data for a day will not be carried forward to next day.The worst part is Uninor does not care to inform to the subscribers regarding this revision of restricting usage every day.

Rs. 14 – 600 MB as 200 MB/day – 3 days

Rs. 24 – 1400 MB as 200 MB/day – 7 days

Rs. 90 – 6000 MB as 200 MB/day – 30 days

Not only that Uninor subscribers also report that Uninor allegedly capping the speed at 40kbps on EDGE network which can support upto 238kbps speed. Even I personally suffered due to this speed cap, later after some email conversation with Uninor customer care helps to remove the speed cap.

Speed capping is not new, most 3G operators cap the speed from 1Mbps to 8Mbps to prevent overload to the network. Tata Docomo caps their 2G/EDGE customers at 128kbps for some time.
