TRAI Simplifies Life for Mobile Users Starting Today

Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) the regulatory body seeks to ensure Quality Of Service (QOS) across telecom operators in the country. On 6 January 2012 it outlined several guidelines via Directive no. 308-5/2011-QOS dubbed as TELECOM CONSUMERS PROTECTION REGULATIONS 2012, as earlier we shared on TelecomTalk. On 21 March 2012 these directives need to be implemented starting today.
BSNL will be the first telecom operator which has already announced the implementation of all new guidelines for its prepaid 2G and 3G Mobile service and all other operators will also follow the same.

Following are the benefits the new guidelines bring to consumers:
Simplicity & standardization of tariff vouchers across operators.
Transparency for Value Added Services activated on the account.
Information on premium rate VAS.

Changes which would be ‘seen’ by consumers from now onwards:

New Start Up Kit:
Will contain only the SIM with no rate plan attached (no confusion of tariffs for the customer).

New Vouchers :
Only 3 voucher types will exist (Plan Voucher, Top-up, STV) (easy to differentiate between talktime vouchers against tariff benefits).

Plan Vouchers :
These would offer only the basic plan, with no talktime attached.

Top-Up Vouchers :
These would provide only talktime (in Rupees) with main account validity.

STV Vouchers :
These would provide only rate cutters, and no talktime.

Colour Coding :
The 3 vouchers would be segregated by different colours, for ease of understanding by consumers.

 Usage information :
Consumers would be informed of the usage after every call / data session / VAS activation. While this may be already available with several operators, the same has been now made mandatory.

Past Usage information:
Consumers can now avail their usage over the last 180 days by paying a fee of Rs. 50 per request. Details that would be made available are Calls / SMS / VAS / Roaming.

Account related information:
Consumers can also avail information about their accounts – Tariff plan activated / Account Balance / Active VAS details are now available via SMS to the customer.

Premium VAS Service:
Consumers will be informed that the number they are calling is chargeable, and after a ‘beep’ the VAS service would be connected, thereby offering consumer greater awareness of the tariffs.
Do let us know if you are happy with the new amendment , will this help the customers in better transparency do share your views via comments

.
The top executives from telecom sector who were issued summonses with a direction to appear before Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Vinod Yadav on May 25 are Airtel’s CEO Sanjay Kapoor, its Director (Legal and Regulatory Affairs) Jyoti Pawar and Vice-President (Head and Regulatory Affairs, Mobile Services) Ashwani Rana.

TRAI also said that it has received lot of complaints whereas the majority of Mobile Number porting requests have been rejected by these mobile service providers on the ground of contractual obligations and outstanding payment dues (less than Rs. 10) as the reason, even though the rejection clause in the Mobile Number Portability Regulations doesn’t allow operators to reject port-out requests on these grounds.

Airtel 4G Due On First Half of April, 2012

If you are disappointed to know Airtel did not launch 4G on March 20, be excited as it is coming fast. As per our sources Airtel may launch LTE-TDD based wireless broadband services in the first half of April, 2012 in Kolkata.

Last week the rumor of Airtel’s 4G launch in Kolkata hit internet and a lot of people, if not everyone had gone crazy to hear it.

Airtel had won spectrum for high-speed wireless broadband service in four telecom circles namely Kolkata, Maharashtra, Punjab and Karnataka and paid Rs. 3,314.36 crore in 2010. The company was allocated 20 Mhz of BWA spectrum in 2.3 Ghz frequency band.

There is a rumour that ZTE may be the equipment partner for Airtel in Kolkata, while tower deal will be done with Indus Towers along with Bharti Infratel. Indus is largest tower company over the globe.

As 2.3 GHz spectrum band will have poor indoor coverage, it is expected Airtel will deploy small cells (femto cells) at places to provide better coverage. It is expected that at this initial stage of LTE roll out the coverage will be scarce and will be available at some pockets of the city. We expect that Airtel may use microwave and fiber optic based backhaul provider to support this ultra high speed wireless services.

At this stage industry leader Airtel is expected to come up with some dongles and some tablets to offer bundled data plans on 4G. This band of LTE spectrum (2.3GHz) is a new band if compared to western countries, as a result Indian private BWA service providers have to make some wise decision to roll out yet to mature LTE services. Many analysis say that in 5 years, LTE will have 20 miillion customers in India.

If we check the history, Kolkata was the first city to have mobile services (2G) in 1995, and today 2G is widely accepted. Can we see the same success with 4G if started with Kolkata?
Now we ask you can 4G be a superhit in India or will a be a flop show whats your take do share your views via comments.

DoT has asked Airtel, Vodafone and Idea  to stop its 3G Roaming via ICRA in non 3G circles with in 24 hours and have given a deadline which will end on Saturday 3 PM.
Now Vodafone India respond to the same and issued a official statement stating “We received the notification from DoT after normal business hours today. “We think that this decision of DoT is completely unreasonable.”

“As stated earlier, the 3G roaming agreements that Vodafone has entered into with other operators are in complete compliance with all Government rules and regulations and this issue was specifically clarified by DoT before the 3G auction was held. Based on this clarification, we went into the auction in good faith.”

“Now, to completely reverse the stand, is totally irrational. It is going to affect millions of our customers adversely and we think it is a retrograde step by DoT. Also, giving a notice at this late hour with courts having gone on vacation from this afternoon is totally arbitrary.   We will take suitable course of action to protect our  and our consumers’ interest.”

So as a consumer what’s your take on this issue ?
